Webster's definition of the word consecrate is "to devote irrevocably to the worship of God." God instructed Moses to consecrate the Tabernacle, its utensils and the Priests by anointing them with oil (Exodus 40:9-11,13,15).
As believers, we are living Temples or Tabernacles (1 Corinthians 6:19) through Jesus Christ and we too can use our bodies and our possessions to both honour and dishonour God. By anointing them, we consecrate them to serve God and not evil.
ANOINTING FOR HEALING
The bible clearly says that anointing with oil should be a part of the church's ministry to the sick.
"Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:14).
Mark also tells us that the disciples of Jesus anointed the sick with oil. "They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them." (Mark 6:13).
Whatever our reasons for anointing with oil, it is important to understand that there are no magical properties in the anointing oil itself. When we anoint, we are simply exercising faith in a loving and an all-powerful God and we are doing so in obedience to his written word. The 'supernatural' part is left entirely up to God!
